I’m not what you would call a beer drinker. I almost always prefer a nice glass of wine over a beer except when the beer is craft brewed. The Craft Beer industry is booming! As a result, craft breweries in southern Vermont and across the state provide over 1,500 jobs and attract over one million tourists every year!

Vermont has its own Vermont Brewers Association with a current enrollment of 49 members. Moreover, there are so many craft breweries in Vermont that for the past 25 years they have held the Vermont Brewers Festival every year on the third weekend of July.

7 Awesome Craft Breweries in Southern Vermont

Madison Brewing  is at 428 Main Street in Bennington, VT. The Madison family started the brewery in the early 1990’s. The family has loyalties to the area as they not only grew up there but still live there as well. They purchased a burned-out storefront in the historic downtown area of Bennington and converted it to a brew pub which was the first of its kind in the area.

The brew pub offers six regular beers plus a seasonal brew. To complement the tasty beers, you can also get lunch and dinner. Moreover, don’t dare forget Madison’s home-made chips! For two decades, Madison Brewing has become a favorite fixture among the Bennington locals.

J’ville Brewery  is at 201 Route 112 in Jacksonville, VT. J’ville Brewery specializes in small-batch hand-crafted beers that you can taste in the tasting room they share with their sister company – Honora Winery! They serve up unfiltered ales that continuously change. Currently, their Maple Brown Ale is now on tap along with the Golden Ale, Red Ale, and a double IPA. Look for them on Facebook.

Northshire Brewery is at 108 County Street in Bennington, VT. It is one of the small craft breweries in southern Vermont that offers a unique selection of craft beers.

They brew traditional options including the Equinox Pilsner, Northshire Hefeweizen, Battenkill Ale, Northshire Chocolate Stout, and their double IPA Sicilian Pale Ale. Each of the beers is available to purchase in 22-ounce bottles or growlers. Check them out on Facebook for more information.

 

McNeill’s Pub and Brewery is at 90 Elliot Street in Brattleboro, VT.  At any given time, this Pub and Brewery serves up 25 distinct McNeill beers on tap! Come and experience the prized beers such as the Bavarian Lagers and Ales.

The variety of brews includes up to 6 different IPAs. Always available are the black and double IPAs. This Pub is a fun place to eat some Mexican food and pizza and listen to live music. Open weekdays from 4 pm – 2 am, and weekends from 1 pm – 2 am. Look for them on Facebook.

 

Whetstone Station is at 36 Bridge Street in Brattleboro, VT. The Whetstone Station Brewery features a variety of micro-brewed beers along with an array of international brews. You can eat at the restaurant that offers a fresh and unique menu that is created with local products whenever possible.

The most unusual thing about this brewery and restaurant is that the official Vermont / New Hampshire geographic boundary runs right through the restaurant so you can drink a beer while standing in two states at the same time! How cool is that?

Hermit Thrush Brewery  is at 29 High Street, Suite 101C in Brattleboro, VT. Hermit Thrush Brewery is proud to offer top-quality Belgian inspired ales. They use a historical brewing process, oak casks, and innovative green technologies that minimize the environmental impact.

The brewery is the only wood-pellet-fired brewery in Vermont. The Hermit Thrush Brewery offers tours most Fridays and Saturdays at 2 pm, 4 pm, and 6 pm. Tours are limited to 15 people so arrive early to reserve your spot!

Backacre Beermakers  is in Weston, VT. This brewery is located near the town of Weston in the beautiful Green Mountains of Southern Vermont.

Backacre is a small producer that focuses on producing one type of brew which is a single sour golden ale. For more than a year, the golden ale ages in oak barrels making its taste unique and flavorful. These beer makers specialize in blendology as they blend the final product from different barrels to achieve an invigorating flavor balanced with earthy, tart and fruity flavors.

Vermont Craft Brewery Challenge
