Book Club: The Innocents Abroad

Jul 26, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm UTC-4

In celebration of the exhibition, Orchestrating Elegance: Alma-Tadema and Design, the Clark hosts a summer book club focusing on three novels set in or inspired by the Gilded Age in New York. The book club meets once a month in June, July, and August. Clark staff members facilitate discussion of Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence (June), Mark Twain’s The Innocents Abroad (July), and Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (August), making connections to Henry Gurdon Marquand’s elegant music room designed by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. The book club is free and open to the public. Wine and sparkling water is available for purchase. Books are available for purchase in the Museum Store.

Generous contributors to Orchestrating Elegance: Alma-Tadema and Design include Sylvia and Leonard Marx and the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from the Coby Foundation, Ltd., Jeannene Booher, Carmela and Paul Haklisch, and Robert D. Kraus. The exhibition catalogue has been published with the generous support of the Gerry Charitable Trust, with additional support from Furthermore: a program of the J.M. Kaplan Fund. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
