Head south from Stratton Mountain, take the first right after the Maintenance garage. Take a right at the first stop sign and drive to the end of this road into the town of Stratton.
Grout Pond Recreation Area is sixteen hundred acres of the Green Mountain National Forest set aside for year-round recreation. Grout Pond is very popular for camping, hiking, canoeing, and fishing.
Over 10.0 miles of multipurpose trails connect with a more extensive trail system of nearby Somerset Reservoir. The area has relatively flat, low-lying terrain. The trails, marked with blue diamonds blazes, are available for year-round hiking. In winter, they are open to ungroomed skiing, and are rated easy to more difficult. Snowmobiles are restricted to Forest Road 262 and a portion of the West Trail. These trails are marked with orange diamond blazes. Camp Loop .9 miles Easy 1/2 hour, East Trail 3.2 miles Easy-Moderate 1 1/2 – 2 hours, Hill Top Trail .8 miles Moderate 1 hour, Pond Loop 2.6 miles Easy 1-1 1/2 hours, West Trail 2.8 mies Moderate 1-2 hours.
