Townshend Lake is located 19 miles north of Brattleboro, Vermont, on Vermont Route 30, and from the third Saturday in May through the Sunday after Labor Day, Townshend Lake Recreation Area is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The recreation area sits in the West River Valley behind the Townshend Dam and offers lot of summer fun and activities. There is a picnic area, a long, sandy swimmming beach, and a boat ramp for starters.
Other amenities include group shelters, playgrounds, flush toilets, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and hiking. Family reunions and special get-togethers can be enjoyed at any of the three convenient picnic shelters for rent with large grills. During the summer, Park Rangers are available to help visitors and to answer questions and during the winter, visitors can enjoy cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
